Motorists and residents advised to avoid flooded portion of Govan Mbeki Road in Crossroads

The City of Cape Town requests motorists, commuters and residents to please avoid Govan Mbeki Road between Symphony Way and Klipfontein Road, due to flooding. The City’s Road Infrastructure Management teams are working on a solution to allow the water to drain from the area, but urge the public to consider alternative routes while we are working on resolving this challenge.
Govan Mbeki Road is flooded between the intersections with Symphony Way and Klipfontein Road. Given the flooding, and also the fact that there may be large potholes concealed under the water surface, road users are strongly advised to avoid this section as far as possible.
Over the past two weeks, the City’s Road Infrastructure Management teams have been struggling to resolve the flooding of water along this section of Govan Mbeki Road. The continuous heavy rainfall over the past two weeks has exacerbated the situation, and more rain is predicted for this weekend.
Unfortunately, the proper drainage of this road is being hampered by:
• the dumping of solid waste around and into stormwater infrastructure in this area
• the misuse and abuse of the stormwater networks
• teams being threatened and prevented to do repair work and undertake interventions
‘Following yesterday’s downpours we want to caution motorists and residents. It is important to note that this road also has potholes, caused by the heavy runoff of the past month. We will only be able to attend to these potholes once the road surface is dry, and the weather outlook has significantly improved with no rain predicted for several days. I want to warn drivers that it is impossible to notice the potholes under the water, and that it is best to avoid this section in the interest of safety. I want to thank the public for working with us. We will keep you informed,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
